Day One

We depart from your home with our exclusive door to door pick up service, and join your tour coach to travel south to Chatham with comfort stops enroute, arriving at your hotel late afternoon, giving time to relax before dinner.

Day Two

After a leisurely breakfast our excursion today takes us to Rochester, time at leisure before we board for our RiverCruiser for a midday cruise on the Medway Estuary, complete with informative commentary.

People have lived and worked on or around the estuary for thousands of years. As a result it is rich in both archaeological and historical remains including: Prehistoric droveways (used to move cattle); Roman pottery kiln sites; Anglo Saxon fish traps (known as Snowt Weirs); numerous military installations, going as far back as the 11th century and two historic dockyards.

Today the estuary is of national and international significance, both economically and environmentally. As a major trading route, it is home to several important shipping terminals, handling a wide range of products and raw materials. Since 1995 it has also played a key role in the UK’s energy supply network, with power stations at Kingsnorth and Grain.

Despite this industrial landscape the estuary continues to support an impressively diverse ecosystem, providing the perfect habitat for thousands of breeding and wintering birds. These birds are so important that the estuary is protected by both national and international designations.

As we head down river we'll pass the Historic Dockyard Chatham, Rochester Castle and out to the Medway Estuary close to the Isle of Grain. This is your chance to discover the history, the wildlife and cultural importance of the Medway Estuary.

We'll then head back towards Rochester Pier, fish & chips will be served onboard the boat – so no need to worry about lunch.

Day Three

First stop today is the historic town of Canterbury with time at leisure to explore the architecture and winding lanes and streets.  This afternoon we visit Tenterden Vineyard, home to the award-winning Chapel Down Winery.

Chapel Down is located in the beautiful Kent countryside, close to the picturesque market town of Tenterden, set amongst 22 acres of vineyards, recognised as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. Here a guided tour shows you the wine making process before finishing with a tasting of the produce – a perfect way to end the day!

Day Four

Today we visit Down House; with its unique place in the history of science and evolution, Down House, the family home of world-renowned scientist Charles Darwin, is a must-see. Discover the recreated bedroom of Charles and Emma Darwin more than 100 years since they lived here and stand in the study where Darwin wrote ‘On the Origin of Species’. And stroll through the gardens that inspired the great man.

In the afternoon we head to Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn second wife of Henry VIII and Mother of Elizabeth I.  The splendid rooms and award-winning gardens boast over 700 years of history making this a memorable visit at any time of the year.

It formed the unlikely backdrop to a sequence of tumultuous events that changed the course of Britain’s history, monarchy and religion.

Its panelled rooms house fine furniture, tapestries, antiques and what is regarded as ‘one of the best collections of Tudor portraits after the National Portrait Gallery’ by David Starkey.

The Book of Hours Room beautifully illuminates two prayer books which belonged to Anne Boleyn and bear her inscriptions and signature.

Today, much of what you see is the result of the remarkable efforts of William Waldorf Astor, who used his fortune to restore and extend the Castle in the early 20th century.

You can also discover magnificent award-winning gardens set in 125 acres of glorious grounds. Marvel at the Pompeiian Wall and classical statuary in the Italian Garden; admire the giant topiary chess set and inhale the fragrance of over 4,000 rose bushes in the quintessential English Rose Garden.
