Rhine, Dragon's Castle & Wine

Rhine, Dragon's Castle & Wine

The sleepy town of Koniswinter is situated on the right bank of the Rhine, at the foot of the Siebengebirge mountain region. The romantic Drachenfels hill, crowned by the ruins of a castle built in the early 12th century, rises behind the town. With magnificent views from the summit, a cave in the hill is said to have sheltered the dragon which was slain by the hero Siegfried. We feature Drachenburg Castle, Bonn and Siebenbirge guided tour, River Rhine boat trip and wine tasting.

Day Two

This morning we head to the River Rhine for an included boat trip, later we join the Drachenfelsbahn Railway. This cog railway line leads to the top of Drachenfels hill and was put into operation in the summer of 1883, now more than 125 years later, the entire complex has been rebuilt. At the summit we include entrance to the Drachenburg Castle, the private villa constructed in the late 19th century is a spectacular building. According to German folklore, Siegfried slayed a dragon just a little further up the mountain. But the story of this spectacular building, a jumble of architectural styles erected in less than three years in the late 19th century by a wealthy stockbroker, is strange enough to become legend in itself.
