Kent is renowned for being the Garden of England, rich in culture and historical heritage. We discover fine gardens and imposing castles as we explore this corner of Englands Green and Pleasant Land.
Leeds Castle | Canterbury | Royal Tunbridge Wells | Great Dixter | Sissinghurst Castle & Garden
We depart from your home and travel south to Kent and our hotel just outside Maidstone, set in scenic countryside.
After a leisurely breakfast we take the short journey to Leeds Castle, said to be The Loveliest Castle in the World The castle has been a Norman stronghold; the private property of six of Englands medieval queens; a palace used by Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon; a Jacobean country house; a Georgian mansion; an elegant early 20th century retreat for the influential and famous; and in the 21st century, it has become one of the most visited historic buildings in Britain.
Well then travel to Canterbury where we have some free time to wander around this historic city. Canterbury is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Canterbury Cathedral, with its stunning mixture of Romanesque and Perpendicular Gothic architecture, the modest Church of St Martin (the oldest church in the English-speaking world) and the ruins of St Augustines Abbey, once a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent.
This morning well visit Royal Tunbidge Wells before our afternoon visit to Great Dixter House & Gardens. This historic Tudor house has a Great Hall that dates to the 15th century and exceptional gardens. Great Dixter was the family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd it was the focus of his energy and enthusiasm and fuelled over 40 years of books and articles. Now under the stewardship of Fergus Garrett and the Great Dixter Charitable Trust.
Sissinghurst Castle Garden was the backdrop for a diverse history; from the astonishing time as a prison in the 1700s, to being a home to the womens land army. It was also a family home to some fascinating people who lived here or came to stay. Today we have a relaxing stroll around the castle and gardens and explore its fascinating history, a refuge dedicated to beauty.
