HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Kendal    |   Keswick   |   Grange-over-Sands   |   Morecambe   |   Barnard Castle

DAY ONE - Arrival

We depart from your home and travel north to the Lake District and our hotel set in 20 acres of private gardens and woodlands overlooking Morecambe Bay.  We arrive in time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Kendal & Keswick

Today we travel through the beautiful Lake District to Kendal, its famous yards formed the capillary network of trade in the town.  Wander through Kendal’s famous 18th century ‘yards’ which filled up with cottages, industry, and workshops to support he growth of Kendal’s trades, the most important of which was the wool trade.

Collin Croft is the best-preserved yard and has many interesting features. Look out for the covered steps from Collin Croft back to the high street and you will pass through the former sites of Collin Croft brewery, a Malt Shovel Inn, an iron foundary, timber yard, brass foundary, printing works stables and cottages!

Later we will make our way to Keswick in the heart of Keswick is the Market Square set in a delightful pedestrian area, making for a relaxing shopping experience. You can find lots of lovely shops both in the main Market Square and down every alley and side street. There are unique shops which you will not find in any other town. Most of the art galleries are off the main square and sell photographs, paintings, pottery and jewellery by local artists and craftspeople.

We will make our way back to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY THREE – Grange-over-Sands & Morecambe

This morning we will make the short journey to Grange-over-Sands, we’ll stay here a short while before making our way to Morecambe.  Stroll along the promenade and find the Eric Morecombe statue, which looks out across the promenade. Maybe enjoy a cup of tea in the 1930’s Midland Hotel; the Art Deco masterpiece has been lovingly restored in recent years.   We will return to our hotel this afternoon for lunch and time to relax in front of the open fires before dinner this evening. Maybe take a walk in the grounds for some fresh air or enjoy the hotel facilities.

DAY FOUR – Barnard Castle

This morning we will head to Barnard Castle in Teesdale, a historic market town which takes its name from the castle around which it grew. The castle, an English Heritage property, was named after its 12th Century founder, Bernard de Balliol, and was later developed by Richard III whose boar emblem is carved above a window in the inner ward. The church of St Mary’s benefited from the patronage of the king with much work carried out including the founding of a chantry. The chancel arch bears corbels with the portraits of Richard and Edward IV and there is a carved boar beside the east window of the south transept.

A haven for discerning shoppers and treasure seekers, the town’s many antique shops provide a charming shopping experience. Many of the town’s shops are thriving independent retailers. On offer on the high street are many distinctive products some made locally.

In the centre of the town stands an octagonal building, the Market Cross known locally as, the ‘Butter Market’, built by Thomas Breaks and given to the town in 1747. Two bullet holes in the weathervane are reputed to be the result of a shooting competition between a volunteer soldier and a local gamekeeper in 1804.

We will return to our hotel later with time to sit and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere before our dinner this evening.
