A fascinating holiday: we explore the Aviation Heritage of Lincolnshire - The Bomber County. The county of Lincolnshire has a deep relationship with the WWII Lancaster Bombers and this special holiday will give you an astonishing insight into their history.
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre | International Bomber Command | Newark Air Museum | Lincoln | Newark
We depart from your home and travel to Grantham and our hotel. A welcome tea or coffee await you as your luggage is taken to your rooms. You can now relax, maybe take a dip in the wonderful leisure pool before dinner this evening.
This morning we visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre to see the legendary Lancaster Bomber 'Just Jane'.
This family run museum was set up over 20 years ago and is now widely seen as a living memorial to the 55,500 men of Bomber Command who lost their lives during WW2. It holds one of the rarest aircraft, an Avro Lancaster Bomber, in its collection along with many wartime vehicles including a Ford WOT1 Crew Bus, the only one of its kind known in existence.
Well be able to have lunch here before our afternoon visit to International Bomber Command Centre, a world-class facility to serve as a point for recognition, remembrance and reconciliation for Bomber Command. Providing the most comprehensive record of the Command in the world, the IBCC ensures that generations to come can learn of their vital role in protecting the freedom we enjoy today.
After our fascinating day well return to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.
Today we visit the Newark Air Museum. The air museum is located on part of the former World War Two airfield of RAF Winthorpe, close to the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire border. Aviation heritage has been at the centre of this historical site for more than forty-five years. Youll see aircraft, helicopters, aeroplanes, aero engines, and aviation exhibits, and explore the history of the diverse displays of aviation artefacts.
Well then go into Newark on Trent. This historic and picturesque market town boasts many heritage attractions.
Famed for its role in the English Civil War, one of the town's main historic attractions is Newark Castle. The castle was a Royalist stronghold but its key position on the banks of the River Trent meant that the castle has been severely damaged over the years. In 2015, the National Civil War Centre opened as the UK's only museum dedicated to telling the story of the brutal conflict.
Well later head back to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.
This morning we travel to Lincoln where you can experience the rich history combined with independent boutique shopping, and great places to eat and drink. The city is easily walkable - the main shopping and tourist area stretches from St Marks Shopping centre in the south up to the Cathedral Quarter - known locally as 'Uphill'.
We spend a nice day here before returning to our hotel in time for dinner this evening.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en-route.
