Romantic Journeys of Northumbria will take you to dale and moor, scenery which is stunning and unspoilt. Visiting the oldest existing railway as well as the home to the first ever steam-hauled passenger train. Not only that but step back in time at Beamish Open Air Museum, capturing the spirit of the Northeast.
Newcastle | Beamish Open Air Museum | South Tynedale Railway | Tanfield Railway | Locomotion at Shildon
We depart from your home and travel to County Durham, and our stunning hotel. Time to relax before dinner this evening.
Today we visit the famous Beamish North of England Open Air Museum, capturing the spirit of the Northeast in the 1800s and 1900s. Attractions include restored tram and replica bus rides, authentic town street, colliery village, go down the mine, old fashioned sweet shop, working farm, steam locomotives and much more. We spend the day here and late afternoon we make our way back to the hotel.
Our first visit today is to Locomotion at Shildon. Locomotion is an outpost of the National Railway Museum in York and contains locomotives, artefacts and memorabilia dating back to the birth of the railways. In 1825 Shildon was home to the first ever steam-hauled passenger train. Next, we are on our way to Weardale, in the heart of the Pennines. Weardale is probably the least known major dale of the English uplands, yet the scenery is stunning and unspoilt, with the beautiful and gentle River Wear. At Stanhope we take a break before we continue along the dale and across the moors to Alston, high in the North Pennines. In Alston we find Englands highest narrow-gauge railway, the South Tynedale Railway, and we enjoy a trip on the line.
This morning we travel to Gateshead, on the south bank of the Tyne, and walk across the new Millennium Winking Eye bridge into Newcastles famous Sunday Quayside Market. We have lots of time to browse around the stalls and look for that elusive bargain, and chance to obtain lunch maybe in a quayside pub. To round off the day we take a ride on the worlds oldest existing railway The Tanfield Railway part of which was built over 300 years ago to transport coal to the ships on the River Tyne.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
