Lake District Cruise | Keswick | Ullswater Cruise | Hutton in the Forest | Sizergh Castle Gardens
We depart from your home and travel north to the Lake District and our hotel where we enjoy tea and coffee on arrival whilst your luggage is taken to your room.
We enjoy a scenic drive through the picturesque Lake District today, travelling north via Windermere then Ambleside, the head of Englands largest natural lake where we can spot the pretty Bridge House as we pass.
We then journey through the picture-postcard village of Grasmere named after its adjacent lake and home to Wordsworth when he wrote his famous poem, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, inspired by the flowers and scenery of the Lake District and finally onto Keswick. We spend time at leisure exploring this lovely market town nestled between the majestic Skiddaw Mountain and the serene lake of Derwentwater, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and museums to browse.
This morning we drive to Pooley Bridge where we have some free time to browse the local shops in this quaint village before heading to the pier to embark on a 1-hour Ullswater steamer cruise to Glenridding, on the south side of the lake. We then travel to Hutton in the Forest, a fabulous Grade I listed country house near the village of Skelton, Cumbria.
The historic house and extensive gardens display a range of architectural and decorative styles from the 17th century to the present day. We can explore the historic interiors from the medieval Stone Hall to the Victorian Drawing Room and stroll through the stunning grounds, including the Walled Garden, Low Garden and Topiary.
We make our way to Lakeside pier this morning, where we board our boat to enjoy a 40-minute cruise around the south of Lake Windermere, arriving at Bowness. From here, we head to Kendal to visit Sizergh Castle Gardens. Sizergh Castle is an imposing medieval house with beautiful gardens (National Trust property). The castle is home to an impressive collection of more than 2,400 objects, with centuries-old portraits and fine furniture sitting alongside modern family photographs (the Stricklands have lived at Sizergh for over 750 years). The intricate wood panelling in the Inlaid Chamber has previously been on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Outside, the garden has a lake, kitchen garden and fabulous limestone rock garden, as well as housing part of the National Collection of ferns.
After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
