HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Edinburgh   |   Trimontium Roman Fort   |   Paxton House   |   Melrose   |   Berwick-upon-Tweed  |   Festive Theme

DAY ONE - Arrival

We depart from your home and travel north to our hotel in Melrose, Scotland. The picturesque town of Melrose is near to the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills, one of the Scottish Borders’ most distinctive landmarks. Melrose Abbey dates from 1136. Melrose is halfway between the Northumberland National Park and Edinburgh – a perfect place to enjoy the transition from England to Scotland and take in the breath-taking Borders scenery. We enjoy a welcome tea/coffee or mulled wine with mince pies on arrival whilst your luggage is taken to your room.

DAY TWO - Edinburgh

Today we spend the day in Edinburgh. Edinburgh’s Christmas market is a spectacular festive treat in the heart of the city centre. Later we’ll return to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY THREE – Trimontium Roman Fort & Paxton House

This morning we travel the short distance to Trimontium, the biggest Roman complex in Scotland. Trimontium Roman fort near Newstead, is of international importance as the largest Roman fort and settlement north of Hadrian’s Wall and the site of one of the greatest concentrations of Roman military-related finds in the British Isles.

Its place in the history and archaeology of this period and area cannot be overstated. It is a truly remarkable site and without doubt still has a great deal to reveal.

The Trust runs a museum telling the story of the Romans in the Scottish Borders & beyond, the relationship with the native population and the legacy left behind as the Romans abandoned their ambitions north of the border.

This afternoon we visit Berwick-upon-Tweed England’s most northerly town and explore Paxton House. Learn more about Paxton House and its rich history and discover the collection of local exhibiting artists in the Hayloft Gallery.  Explore the grounds, gardens, riverside and woodland. Or, treat yourself with an indulgent afternoon tea in the Stables Tearoom and a trip to the Regency Gift Shop.

DAY FOUR - Melrose

Today we relax in Melrose. Why not visit Melrose Abbey a short distance from our hotel. Ruined Melrose Abbey dates from 1136. A casket discovered believed to contain the heart of Robert the Bruce was marked by a re-burial ceremony and commemorative stone tablet. You might also like to visit the Three Hills Roman Heritage Centre in Melrose, or take a stroll through the park.

After breakfast we will depart our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
