HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Beverley   |   Wakefield   |   Ilkley   |   Nostell House

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Yorkshire and our hotel on the outskirts of Leeds. Time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Beverley

Today we head to Beverley, a thriving traditional, pretty cobbled street, market town with its Market Cross still standing proudly in the centre of its bustling marketplace.

There’s lots to see and explore here in this well-loved town, from the boutique shops and historic pubs to the Flemingate Shopping Centre located in the area of the town once known for its tannery.

Widely regarded as one of Europe's finest Gothic churches, Beverley Minster is famous for its abundance of 13th Century stone carvings, stained glass, and decoration. Nearby, St. Mary's Church is also blessed with many architectural wonders and oddities. For a taste of medieval Beverley, take the colourful town trail, or browse the bustling streets of Toll Gavel, Ladygate and Hengate.

In the Edwardian Art Gallery, located in the heart of the town, is the largest collection of works by celebrated local artist, Frederick Elwell along with themed exhibitions.

After our visit we’ll return to our hotel for tea/coffee and scones and time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY THREE – Nostell House and Wakefield

This morning we travel to Nostell House, a Georgian treasure house, landscaped gardens, parkland and stables courtyard.  Nostell is one of the greatest treasure houses of the north of England, surrounded by 300 acres of parkland and gardens.

Created as an ambitious statement by the Winn family between 1725 and 1785, generations added to the richness of the house, from Robert Adam interiors and a world-class collection of Thomas Chippendale furniture, to priceless paintings and antique curiosities.

After our visit we’ll head for Wakefield where you will spend the afternoon.  There’s much to see in Wakefield including the historic Wakefield Cathedral. A historic gem located in the heart of the city.

Not only is the Cathedral one of the UK’s most magnificent churches, it also has the tallest spire in Yorkshire – stretching up some 247ft (even higher than York Minster) it dominates the city’s skyline.  As impressive as it is on the outside, Wakefield Cathedral (or the Cathedral Church of All Saints) also reveals an awe-inspiring interior. Inside a colossal space is filled with historic artifacts. It also boasts the world’s most complete collection of stained glass by the renowned designer Charles Kempe.

After our enjoyable day we’ll return to our hotel with time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY FOUR – Ilkley and Departure

This morning we’ll make our way home, visiting Ilkley on our way.  We’ll call at the Ilkley Manor House Museum, a small but beautiful building with heaps of history.  There will then be time for you to explore the town and maybe you’d like to visit Betty’s Tea Room or All Saints Church, or maybe the Toy Museum before we make our journey home.
